Freshmen Cowboys end season with 52-49 win over St. Edmond

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboy Freshman Basketball team opened up after the holiday break with a 41-26 win over Eagle Grove, before going on a seven game losing skid heading into the final game of the season against St. Edmond. The first time the teams had met, back in December, the Gaels handed the Cowboys a 44-22 loss.

The Cowboys came out ready to play when the two teams met on February 9th in Clarion, with the Cowboys using good ball movement and aggressive play to jump out to a 9-2 lead. At the end of the first quarter, the Cowboys led 13-9. The Cowboys extended the lead to 23-14, only to have the Gaels hit some threes and cut it to 23-22. Clinton Miller completed a traditional three-point play right before the half to put the Cowboys up at halftime.

“The first time we played St. Edmond, they beat us badly in transition and they out-rebounded us 42-31,” said Coach Logan Holmes, “This time, we did a much better job getting back in transition and we boxed out better, outrebounding them 33-23. We also did a much better job defending their post players. Their three-point shooters kept them in the game. Offensively, we moved the ball much better and valued each possession more than we did the first time.”
