A flight of honor- Two Wright County Veterans fly to D.C.

Donald Deuel of Eagle Grove and Larry Golden of Goldfield had the distinction of being part of the Brushy Creek Honor Flight that took off for Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Sept. 21.
“It was a fantastic trip,” said Golden, who admitted he never thought he would get the chance to be part of an Honor Flight.
“It was amazing,” Deuel echoed, noting the camaraderie of the Veterans on the trip and the reaction of the people waiting to greet them at both the Fort Dodge and D.C. airports.
Deuel served in the Navy from 1959 to 1963 and was part of Vietnam.  He also served two additional years on inactive duty.  Golden served from 1969 to 1971 in the United States Army and was also part of Vietnam.
Deuel said he joined the Navy with a friend because “We were young guys and wanted to look over the hill and do something different.”
Golden, on the other hand, was originally drafted. “I got my draft notice in the mail and I went and took my physical in Fort Des Moines,” he said.

He went on to recall how as he stood there in line, waiting, the Marine Sergeant went through and tapped every third person on the should.  Those that were tapped were to go with him into the Marine Corps.  Golden was one of those tapped.
