Cowgirls go 6-0, win their invitational on Saturday

Judging from their season-opening performance at this year’s Cowgirl Invitational, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows varsity volleyball team seems primed and ready for another strong season after dropping only one set to go undefeated and take the championship.

“Coming out and winning our home tournament is a great way to start the season,” stated head coach Katrina Terhark. “I was very pleased with how the girls played. We served tough and aggressively all daylong. It was great to play to see what worked well and what didn’t, and now we can get back in the gym and fine-tune some things. It was a great overall team effort for the day, and I’m looking forward to an exciting season.”

The team opened with Eagle Grove winning in two sets 21-11 and 21-10. Team serving efficiency was 90.2 percent, with Kenna Kruger at 9 of 10 (one ace), Haley Nerem at 8 of 9 (three), Vanessa Kolb at 6 of 6 (two) and Alaina Friesleben at 6 of 7 (two). Kruger had seven assists as setter, with Morgan Middleton pounding three kills and both Haley Nerem and Emily Kapka two each. Megan Askelsen and Nerem had four digs each, with Kapka and Kolb making two solo blocks apiece.
