Cowgirl track & field team third in their class at home relays

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows girls track & field team finished third in class A at the annual Cowgirl Relays last Tuesday. A strong Pocahontas Area/Laurens-Marathon team won the title with 365 points, followed by: Iowa Falls-Alden 277, C-G-D 244, Hampton-Dumont 221, Forest City 189 and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 181.

The 4x1 relay brought home the lone gold for the red and black, touring the track in 54.08. A host of other finishes followed them, as Courtney Harle took a pair of silvers in the 100 dash (13.32) and the high jump (tied at 4’ 4”) while Mikayla Hennigar fashioned a 108’ 10” discus throw for runner-up in that event. Faith Nelson was not to be outdone, coming in third in both the discus and the shot, while Meleah Johnson got into the act as well in taking third in the long jump. The Cowgirls were second in both the 4x2 and distance med relays.

On Thursday night at Buffalo Center, the red and black were third again at the Lady Bison Relays. Central Springs took the title with 148 points, finishing comfortably ahead of Forest City with 114 points. Following them were: C-G-D 111, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 97, North Union 63 and Belmond-Klemme 37.

The ladies brought home a fistful of gold medals. Those included Harle in the long jump (4’10”), Ana Johnson in the 100 hurdles (17.06) and both the 4x8 (11:37.68) and shuttle hurdle (1:15.00) relays. There were a bunch of top three finishes behind them, with Meleah Johnson (long jump) in second and Faith Nelson (discus), Harle again (100), Kenna Kruger (400) and Vanessa Kolb (800) all third individually.
