Cowboys split their two games for the week

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows varsity boys basketball team opened their first week of action on the road, traveling to Eldora and taking a 72-66 loss to South Hardin. The score was tied at 15-15 after one quarter, and stood at 35-29 in favor of the Cowboys at the half. The home team outscored them by five thru the third quarter to tie it up again entering the final period.

“Every time you open a season, there will have to be changes made,” stated head coach Brandon Lantzky. “You can be very prepared, but we need to be able to recognize things that we need to fix. That includes playing aggressive but stop too many fouls. We need to play in a smart way, and stop trying to block every shot attempt. We had three starters with three fouls in just the first half. When you put a team in the bonus by the first quarter, you are going to have a tough time winning.”

Two guys hit for double figures, led by Rhett Darland’s 22 points including a blazing 10 of 12 from the free throw line. Sam Urness pumped in 17 points on 6 of 11 from the field and a trey. Will Weidemann was close at nine points on 50 percent from the field and a trey. Zach Martin added six points, Alex Machuca five points with one trey, Riley State four points and Max Powers three points in support.
