Cowboys lose tight 2-1 decision to Bulldogs

In a closely contested game last Wednesday in Hampton, the home Bulldogs pulled out a 2-1 win over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. The lone Cowboy run was scored by Carter Dietz on an RBI single by Caleb Krueger. Also getting one base hit each were Tyler Stein, Reed Abbas, Brier Boyd and Cael Chase. Abbas stole a base, with Boyd and Mateo Martinez both taking a four-ball walk to first.

Boyd pitched a great game, but sadly didn’t get the win. He allowed just two earned runs on a five-hitter with four walks and nine K’s.

“Boyd deserved a win for as well as he pitched, the offense didn’t come through for him,” stated head skipper Nick Willwerth. “We were putting the ball in play, we just weren’t finding any holes in their defense. That’s what we get for hitting ground balls. We needed to do a better job of getting the ball in the air. Ground balls are usually outs. We had poor approach at the plate as well. Taking a lot of first pitch fastballs for strikes or were late on the ones we did swing at or swung at breaking balls early in the count. That’s the exact opposite of what we preach.”
