Cowboys defeat West Hancock 8-7

Last Tuesday night in a home game, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows varsity baseball team defeated West Hancock by an 8-7 score. The Cowboys plated four runs in the opening frame, only to see the Eagles go up 7-4 after five complete innings. The home team came back with one run in the sixth and three more in the final frame to take the win.

Jacob O’Connor had a double in four trips to the plate, driving in three runs for the game. Also getting base hits were Zack Leist, Will Weidemann and Bryce Tegtmeyer. Weidemann finished with two RBI, while both Zach Martin and Tyler Steiner brought home one run each. Leist scored three of those runs, with Weidemann scoring twice and Tanner Abbas, Tegtmeyer and Reed Abbas all crossing the dish once each. Tanner, O’Connor and Tegtmeyer all stole a base, while Weidemann and Martin both showed a good eye in drawing three walks each. Tanner and Steiner both made two walks each, with Brendon Boyd, O’Connor and Tegtmeyer all getting one free pass to first each.

Brendon Boyd threw six strong innings on the mound, allowing just one earned run on a six-hitter with five walks and five K’s. O’Connor pitched the final inning, giving up no hits or earned runs with three strikeouts.

“I was extremely proud of our kids in the way they fought back, never quit and gutted out a win,” stated head coach Nick Willwerth. “We played very sloppy for six innings, and were fortunate to have an opportunity to win it in the last inning."
