Cowboys defeat both SE Valley, Eagle Grove

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball team may be getting hot at just the right time, after winning their first two games in district play. They defeated Southeast Valley last Tuesday 73-57, then disposed of Eagle Grove 83-53 on Thursday to move into the district final. A win there puts them into the sub-state round (by the time you read this, they will have played South Hamilton. Look for those results in next week’s Monitor).

Versus the Jaguars, the Cowboys got off to a bit of a slow start and trailed 31-25 at the break. A strong third quarter found them outscoring their opponent 29 points to 10 to open up a 54-41 advantage to start the fourth period.

Four players reached double figures, led by Rhett Darland’s 22 points including burying five buckets from downtown. Sam Urness scored 17 points including going 5 of 6 at the charity line. Zach Martin checked in with 11 points on 50 percent from the field, and Bryce Tegtmeyer chipped in 10 points on 50 percent as well. Alex Machuca scored seven points, Riley State four points and Alec Martin two points in support. Will Weidemann was a demon on the boards in grabbing 16 rebounds, 14 of them defensively. Tegtmeyer got his mitts on seven caroms, Darland five and Urness four. Machuca, Z. Martin and State all added three rebounds each to their final lines, with Christian Gaytan and Jaace Weidemann adding two each and A. Martin one.
