Cowboy wrestling team wins sectional, ten advance to districts

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows wrestling team traveled to Humboldt last Saturday for a Class 2A sectional tournament. The Cowboys emerged with the team title, picking up 256.5 points to easily finish ahead of Algona at 193 points. Following them were: Humboldt 169, Southeast Valley 166, South Central Calhoun 121.5 and Pocahontas Area/L-M 101. By the time you read this, the Cowboys will have hosted a regional dual this past Tuesday for the right to advance again to the state dual tournament. Check next week’s Monitor for the full results of that event.

Taking titles in their brackets were Remington Hanson (113), Keaton Wilson (120), Reed Abbas (138), Tanner Abbas (145), Reymundo Vasquez (160) and Spencer Trenary (285). Hanson pinned Bethel (SEV) in :48 in the finals, Wilson put McKenna’s (A) shoulders to the mat in 2:52 and Reed scored a fall in :41 over Klingson (SEV) to advance. Tanner disposed of Busse (H) by fall in :55, Vasquez took a 3-1 win over Goodman (SCC) and Trenary earned a pin in 1:50 of Etherington (A) to win his gold medal.

Also punching their ticket for the district round were Tyler Stein (106), Bryce Allen (126), Connor Johnson (132) and Mason Carpenter (170). Stein lost to Mielke (PA-LM) in the finals, but had already beaten Nelson so avoided a wrestleback. Allen lost to Ruffridge (PA-LM) in the final, with no wrestlback needed as he had already beaten Hemmestad (SEV). Johnson lost a 7-0 match to Lawrence (SEV), but had already beaten Kollmorgan so no wrestleback needed. Carpenter lost 6-4 in overtime to Devine (A), but won his wrestleback match in a 15-0 technical fall over Fluckiger (SEV).
