Cowboy track & field team is fifth at NCC meet in Clear Lake

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows boys varsity team didn’t pick up any golds at this year’s North Central Conference track & field meet last Thursday in Clear Lake, but still had several individual and relay efforts do well at the meet in taking sixth place in the final standings. Humboldt took the top spot with 152 points, just edging past Iowa Falls-Alden with 151 points. The rest of the teams finished like this: Algona 142, Webster City 113, Clear Lake 93, C-G-D 43, St. Edmond 24 and Hampton-Dumont 17.

“We had some personal bests on a fairly nice night,” said head coach Craig Warnke. He reported that his shuttle hurdle foursome is still number one on the state chart but just barely. He feels Urness could make it in the long jump, or at least has the potential to put the mark out there. He hopes to get both O’Connor and Harker thru in the 110 highs, but admits to being not absolutely sure on the sprint medley chances.

The highest varsity finishes came from the shuttle, distance medley and 110 hurdles events which all finished in third place. The shuttle foursome of Jacob O’Connor, Clinton Miller, Alex Machuca and anchor Chase Harker turned in a 1:02.86 clocking, while the medley grouping of Sam Urness, Machuca, Kamren Jergenson and Derek Conlon toured the track in 3:55.15. O’Connor took that same spot by himself with a 15.35 in the 110 highs. Other strong finishes came from Urness in the long jump (4th), Harker in the 110 (4th) and the 4x8 (5th).
