Cowboy track & field team competes at qualifier meet

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows boys track & field team took part in a Class 2A state qualifying (Girls Regional/Boys District) meet last Thursday at Garner. Forest City took the team title with 143 points, followed in order by: Central Springs 85, South Hamilton 79, Clear Lake 72, Estherville-Lincoln Central 63.5, Pocahontas Area/Laurens-Marathon 55.5, Osage 55.5, Emmetsburg 51.5, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 48, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows 42, Eagle Grove 27 and Belmond-Klemme 19.

Representing the Cowboys in Des Moines this week will be Jacob O’Connor in the 110 high hurdles. He took second for an automatic berth with a 15.86 clocking. Also going is the shuttle hurdle relay, which he is a part of along with Clinton Miller, Alex Machuca and anchor Chase Harker. They blazed to a 1:01.61 to take first place.

“It would have been nice to finish higher team-wise, but much of our events moved up in rank,” stated head coach Craig Warnke. “We had lots of personal bests and some decent runs.” He explained that the shuttle relay crew had been practicing their starts for two weeks to get the steps down just right. “We’ll use our technique at state,” said the veteran coach. “Machuca had a nice set of hurdles on his leg, while Miller is on the three-step form now. If the others run like they have been, I feel good about our chances.” He also felt O’Connor ran a pretty clean 110 race. “He’s put in a lot of extra time on that event,” said Warnke.
