Cowboy baseball team scores runs, can't find wins

Last Monday night in Humboldt, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows varsity baseball team gave a good effort but dropped a 9-4 game to the Wildcats. The red and black plated three of those scores in the third inning. Weidemann swung a strong bat in going 3 for 3 with three RBI. Brendon Boyd smacked a double for his only contact, driving in a run while scoring twice himself. Reed Abbas and Bryce Tegtmeyer both contributed singles, with Reed and Zach Martin also crossing the dish. Reed, Tegtmeyer and Martin all had a stolen base each, while Martin showed a good eye in drawing two walks. Brendon, Reed and Brier Boyd all registered one walk each.

O’Connor threw 4 2/3 innings on the mound, giving up four earned runs with seven walks and six strikeouts. Brendon pitched 1 1/3, allowing only one hit with no earned, no walks and two strikeouts.

“We were aggressive right out of the gate in getting up 4-0 after two innings,” stated head skipper Nick Willwerth. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to maintain our intensity and allowed them to creep back into the game. Will had a great night at the plate. I’m really impressed with what he’s been able to do offensively this year, and credit to him for taking pride in his craft and constantly working to hone his skill set at the plate. Defensively, we fell behind in counts to too many hitters. Anytime you force yourself to make pitches on 2-0, 3-1 or full counts, you’re playing with fire on the mound. Humboldt capitalized on that.”
