Cowboy baseball team plays well, still comes up short of a win

Last Wednesday, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball team traveled to Algona and lost a 12-8 game to the  Bulldogs. The home team was up 6-0 before the Cowboys exploded for eight scores in the fourth. Unfortunately, that’s all they would muster.

Reed Abbas went 2 for 3 with a double, two RBI and one run scored. Will Weidemann was 2 for 3, while Tanner Abbas got a base hit, an RBI and scored once. Tyler Stein, Zach Martin, Kain Nelson and Brier Boyd were all credited with an RBI each, with Mateo Martinez crossing the dish twice as a courtesy runner. Stein, Bryce Tegtmeyer, Caleb Krueger and Jaace Weidemann all came home once each. T. Abbas and Boyd both stole a base. T. Abbas, Martin and Boyd all showed a good eye at the plate in drawing two walks each, with Tegtmeyer, R. Abbas, Nelson and Krueger took one free pass each.

“We showed some fight in this one,” stated head skipper Nick Willwerth. “We battled back from being down six runs to regain the lead in the fourth at 8-6, but couldn’t find a way to close out the game. We’ve got to be ready to go on the mound from the first pitch. That first inning got away from us, and we didn’t command the strike zone.”
