County Conservation District presents awards

The Wright County Soil and Water Conservation District presented awards at the Wright County Farm Bureau's Membership Appreciation supper on August 6.
Jon and Mary Nissen of Renwick received the award for Iowa Farm Environmental Leader. The Nissens were nominated for the soil and conservation work they do on their farms in Wright, Humboldt and Kossuth counties. Their farming operation is a continuous corn on corn system.  Jon does minimum tillage on his acres and plants 15-inch rows to help place nutrients better and to leave a better crop residue.  He also feels that these farming practices are building organic matter in his soil.  Jon completes soil testing on his acres every 3 years to help pinpoint where to place the nutrients.
Jon and Mary have also planted several wildlife food plots in their farming operation.  In these food plots they have added diversity by planting sunflowers and snow peas for wildlife.  They have also done extensive work creating wildlife habitat by installing woodlands and adding other management practices to improve the landscape. The Nissens have completed some timber stand improvements to their acres and enrolled in a variety of CRP practices to benefit their soil and the wildlife.
