C-G-D approves early graduations before new school year

The Clarion-Goldfield- Dows Community School Board met for their regular meeting on Monday, August 13.

At the meeting the board approved an unusually high number of early graduations. Four students are set to graduate early this year, already on course to satisfy their academic requirements.

“That’s the most I’ve ever seen,” said Superintendent Robert Olson.

Before approving the early graduations, the board did discuss early graduation policy. Though it is school policy that students must submit a plan for their post-school activities, Olson recommended that the board waive that particular requirement and consider adjusting the policy in the future as he found it difficult to justify forcing a student that had already completed all of their education to remain in school.

In another unusual situation, the board discussed notification that the health department will be coming in to inspect the school’s concession stand, much in the same way the regular kitchen is inspected. In communicating with other districts, this doesn’t appear to be a regular practice, leaving the board to wonder why C-G-D has been singled out.

“I don’t know why we are the test case,” said Olson. “We’ll see where this goes.”
